You’ll learn to write confidently so you can play a vital part in critical conversations — maybe even change the world.
You’ll graduate from Barnard with an intellectual mindset that will help you adapt as the world shifts: a willingness to take risks and innovate, an intellectual breadth that keeps you nimble, a curiosity that welcomes the new. You’ll be prepared to speak up skillfully so you can help chart the direction that change takes. And you’ll have the tools you need to study the world through many lenses — textual, archival, mathematical, empirical, artistic, and digital. These lenses let you approach problems from a freer perspective. And they’ll help you create solutions to challenges we can’t even imagine today.
Communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills are always in demand. You’ll hone them here. Whatever your major, you’ll also develop digital skills so you can rise to new opportunities. At Barnard, you’ll manipulate, interpret, and disseminate data in ways that engage and are relevant to your audience, whether you’re a poet or a statistician.
Learning at Barnard involves thinking and doing, the classroom and the real world. You’ll have opportunities to shift perspectives as you take the ideas you’ve learned into the research lab, behind the scenes in a museum, or abroad. Recently, some Barnard students worked with asylum seekers at a Texas ICE family detention center, while dozens assisted faculty with research or conducted their own projects as scientists.
You’ll explore New York City hands-on, interacting with neighborhood organizations and City institutions, building the kind of cultural awareness and adaptability you can apply anywhere.
Barnard emphasizes writing and speaking, because it’s not enough to have great plans and ideas. Especially in a world where female voices are not always heard, you also need the skills to communicate your thinking powerfully so your voice can inform, inspire, and persuade.
You’ll learn to write confidently so you can play a vital part in critical conversations — maybe even change the world.
You’ll Invigorate your writing by working one-on-one with specially trained peer tutors from all disciplines.
Barnard’s peer tutors help you articulate your ideas and cultivate powerful speaking skills you can use to help guide the narrative.
